"You won't know the fear. Fear kills the mind. Wherever the fear has passed, it will only be me." The film opens in theaters on December 18 of this year.
This week Warner Bros. has released the first and long-awaited official trailer for Dune, Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi classic and which, if the pandemic allows, will hit theaters on December 18. I'm sure you've paid attention to all or almost all of his details. And also to its protagonists: Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Oscar Isaac as Leto Atreides, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, and Zendaya as Chani, among others. But do you know what young Paul says at the end of the advance? "You won't know the fear. Fear kills the mind. Wherever the fear has passed, it will only be me."

It turns out that more than words, what Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides says is more of a prayer. It is the Litany Bene Gesserit against fear, taught by his mother Lady Jessica. In Herbert's original novel, it reads like this: "I will not know fear. Fear kills the mind. Fear is the little evil that leads to total destruction. I'll face my fear. I'll let it pass over me and through me. And when it's over, I'll turn my inner eye to scrutinize its path. Wherever my fear has passed, there will be nothing left. I'll just be there." Interestingly, as in Villeneuve's version, David Lynch's 1984 version also appeared shortened.

The litany against the fear of the Bene Gesserit is used by the women of the Brotherhood to focus their minds and calm down in times of danger. Paul uses it when Gaius Helen Mohiam, Reverend Mother of the Bene Gesserit, tests him for the gom Jabbar, which also comes out in the trailer and consists of inserting her right hand into a green metal cube with one side open. Paul has to endure unbearable pain, an illusion, in order to show that he can master any nerve in the body and that he is human and not animal. The young Atreides passes the test and is saved from a needle with a deadly poison, the Gom Jabbar, which rests on his neck.
Dune's cast, apart from Chalamet, Ferguson, Rampling, Oscar Isaac, and Zendaya, he also features Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, David Dastmalchian as Piter De Vries, Dave Bautista as Glossu 'The Beast' Rabban, Stellan Skarsg.rd as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster as List.
